Boston International Overdose Awareness Day Memorial

The MA Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, Boston Office of Recovery Services, and Boston Medical Center will plant 20,000 purple flags on the Boston Commons in remembrance of the 20,000 lives lost to overdose in Massachusetts between 2012-2022. An additional 2,357 flag will honor that many overdose deaths during 2022. Governor Healey and other government officials will observe a moment of silence and plant flags around 9:00am. Community members wishing to participate in planting flags may contact [email protected] to volunteer, and the public is welcome to visit the area between August 31-September 4 for solemn observation and to access resources related to substance use services, harm reduction, and grief support.
